Grape Soda

Plenty of pleasing purples in this pretty piece! I was so pleasurably peaceful while making this purple piece, because purple is my favorite color. And because this worked up so fast and friendly. The yarn is perfectly smooth, in the category of "Mandala Ombre."  It did not snag once, and it flowed like an easy purple stream. I used a size J crochet hook for this piece, and that was a good match for this texture. I might go one size larger next time, because I think that might open up the mesh and make it more flexible. 😀 The yarn company calls this color scheme "Chi," which is part of their series of clever names that make a zen theme. Like "Balance" and "Serene," those are great names for color schemes in this yarn category. I like the sound of "chi" but I wasn't too sure about using the word as a color label... A quick internet search came up with so many possible meanings for "chi." It might mean "energy force,&q

Best Crochet Pose Ever! My beautiful cousin, Linda, belongs on the cover of a crochet magazine! She makes Sage and Sand  look like it was made for royalty.

Southwest Sunrise

I absolutely loved working with this yarn, and I already have more of this category in different color schemes. It is a bit pricey, but I bought a variety of color schemes on sale, and I'm so glad I did! I will definitely be making more pieces like this, because this yarn works up so smooth and easy, with gorgeous texture,  and  it looks and feels great.  These two cozy casual scarves came from the same one cake of yarn. The yarn company calls it "Comfy Cotton Blend," and I just call it perfect. (This is the same category of yarn I used in the Confetti piece of Confetti and Rust .) The company name for this color scheme is "Stained Glass" which I do think is a fantastic name... But. I just had to call this pair Southwest Sunrise, because the earthy gold, dusty purple, dry sage, and sky blue colors sang to me a song of morning in the desert.  A cake of colors contains a generous 392 yards of this light weight yarn, which was more  than enough to create these two

Jelly Bean Cotton Candy

What a fluffy fun pair! These scarves are made of a novelty yarn that worked up fast and easy. Colorfully fuzzy and so delightful to play with, I love how this yarn looks and feels. It is a bit on the pricey side, but I can hold out for those smart sales. 😎  I will definitely be making more colorful gems with this yarn. These scarves are like costume pieces, using the same "Mandala Fluff" category of yarn I used a few months ago in  Costume Party . Except this time, instead of using the fluffy yarn only as edging and fringe, I made the entire piece using this fuzzy fun yarn. And what a sweet treat this is! I just had to call it Jelly Bean Cotton Candy, because, well... yea. Obviously. 😁 This yarn has a jumbo weight, and that makes it easy to work with. It flows smoothly and didn't catch or snag even once, which was a pleasant surprise. But because of its fluffiness, this yarn hides the stitch detail (body, above) a little bit. And that's ok, because, WOW, it'

Neptune's Beard

Love the deep ocean colors in these coils! This fringe is so fun to play with, and I have to chuckle over it looking like bouncy hair that a friendly sea monster might have. I just had to name this piece Neptune's Beard, which should also be a color, if it isn't already. 😎 Besides the funky fun fringes, the whole scarf looks great and feels so comfy. It's just one big blue bundle of cozy fun. Plus it folds wonderfully, and has a nice drape as it hangs for a pose.   The yarn company calls this category of yarn "Boing!" and that is exactly correct. It is a bulky weight of mixed acrylic and polyester, with a high-twist fabrication that gives it a surprising springy'ness. I never knew that textiles could be this springy! I was pleasantly geeked out to learn that elasticity is a thing in the fiber arts. It makes me want to visit a factory where this kind of yarn is made. Is that possible? Maybe I could claim that it is a field trip for my students . 😎 This yarn

Granny Square Greatness

Image
Six years ago?! No way. Someone has added wrong. It cannot be six years already since I crocheted this great group of granny squares. When these photos appeared today in my "Throwback Thursday" newsfeed of memories, I just had to shake my head, and try to deny it. Ah, those memories. Blurry photos (miss that old camera, an actual little camera), lame poses, bad lighting... Ok, yea, that was me. I do have to chuckle over how even back then, without a blog to post photos on, I was already trying to pose the crochet piece. 😁👍 What a big fun beast this was to work on, night after night, that cold Wisconsin winter. The box of tissues there for scale (above photo) gives you an idea of how big this thing is after it was all assembled.  I remember those weeks so well, and absolutely loved snuggling down each evening to work on another square. Thirty nights in a row, I practiced a different technique (like the tbl stitch, through the back loop) or solved a problem (like corner perfe
