Cake'ity Cake'ness

Image
I had so much fun creating these "cakes" for my cousin's wedding! 😎 Each one contains a dozen scarves, rolled up and layered, all different shapes and sizes. Inside each layer are more scarves of various textures and color schemes, like delightful little hidden secrets. 🤩 Plus there are several extra pieces of ruffle that wrap around between the layers.  There are so many different kinds of yarn wrapped up in these cakes, it is crazy fun. From bulky novelty yarn, to fine weight sparkling, the mixture of textures is a clash all its own. 😋 And, so easy to assemble, plus they can be rearranged on a whim. Here's how they stack up:  Love all the textures and colors! The "chocolate cake" contains much more than plain chocolate. There is Army camouflage in there, along with blueberry, burgundy, and a shaggy woodland color scheme. Like buried treasure, there is so much to uncover as you take apart the layers. This gift keeps on giving! 😄 The "princess cak...

Unicorn Camouflage

Image
This is not your grandfather's camouflage! 😋 Or is it? 😁 I absolutely loved making this sweet piece, and it is comfy cozy enough for any grandfather to appreciate. Plus, those soft colors are perfect for grandpappy dreaming. Even softer: the chenille yarn is positively luxurious! And so fun to work with, I love how it feels so fluffy and works up so fast. The yarn company calls this yarn "Naptime," and that is a perfect label for chenille. It has a medium weight given, but I feel like it borders on light weight. Each strand is quite thin by itself, and that can be beautiful. For example: Hippie Fringe , Clouds and Sunshine,   Sage and Sand .  And a beautiful bonus of Sage and Sand: New Orleans Winter . But this time, I wanted something a bit more bulky. So, I combined four strands at once, each a different color. And, yay!! The camouflage of unicorns emerged like magic. 😍  I do love mixing colors, and several times I have made classic camouflage items for my A...

Fireworks Cake Volcano Circus

Orange, pink, yellow, purple, green and white go perfectly together! When you panel the bold colors, trim with more delicate colors, and fringe the whole package with all of the above. 🤩 Too big to be a baby blanket. (Or, is it?!) Not big enough to be an afghan. (But still?) Shaped wrong for a shawl, but could be a silly shawl for kids' dress-up. (Obviously.) Too small for a bedspread. (Maybe not?) Too big for a lap blanket. (Or might be perfect?) 😄 This piece is definitely perfect. This piece was so easy and fun to make: four panels of double crochet, each with single crochet edging in a different color. Then trimmed with a barely-there ruffle (just two stitches per one base stitch) in white. This gives it a fun flounce, and doesn't take as long to work up. Then fringe added to the long edges, using all the colors.   I had way too much fun posing this piece as a silly, spouting, colorful cake. 😎 But it also poses very nicely as the over-sized lap blanket that it is...

Galaxy Fest

Image
This experiment could also be called Galaxy Mess! 😎 The colors played out kind of wonky, but still cute. I was using up old bargain yarn, and just trying a new spiral pattern I saw on a video tutorial. It is colorful fun! But not quite what I was looking for in a spiral piece. Actually, I'm not even sure what I was looking for in a spiral piece. Just having fun with colors.   😄 It ended up looking less spiral'y and more just concentric circles. Which is still cool, I like it. There is a poncho feel about it, and I had fun posing it with a few props for scale.  I've experimented before with a round piece: Poncho Tequila. And I probably will again. Because it is so fun to keep going around and round. 😍 Front side and back side. There is no right or wrong side. 😎 Colors + Spirals = Crochet Fun
