Fun Freebies

I love it when I get free yarn! 😎 A colleague texted me one evening, asking if I would like some yarn that she didn't want anymore. Well, obviously, of course, definitely, yes. If it's one thing I really, really need, it's more yarn. 😁 The next day at work, she gave me two new skeins, plus a box of odds'n'ends. I was absolutely delighted! The colors are not something I would normally buy for myself, but once I had it all for free, I knew immediately what I wanted to do. Experiments with granny squares. 🤩

I wanted to see how this color scheme worked up, as a simple dc granny square. These earthy colors, with rust and smokey blue, are gorgeous together! And they don't exactly work out properly in the rows of a granny square, but it doesn't matter. Still looks beautiful, and I actually kind of like how the pattern of changing colors gets muddled up at every turn. It's a lovely muddle. 😁

The other experiment I've been wanting to try is taking the standard dc granny square pattern and turning it into a treble stitch pattern. How does that work at the corners? Does it hold up along the edges? Or is it too flimsy? Well, the answers are: it makes gorgeous corners, it holds up (but got a bit rounded), and yes, it is flimsy (but that is part of the charm 😎). It was kinda pucker'y in the end, plus rounded and flimsy, so I tried to hide that with tassels at the corners. Emphasis on the "tried to." 😂 Doesn't matter, I still loved working with it, and had fun learning a thing or two.

These two interesting pieces are not something I will do again, but it was good to work through the process of it. A color scheme that gets disconnected at every turn, and a stitch height that doesn't fit squarely with the geometry of the piece. Lessons learned. Examples of what not to do. I will take both of these samples to Genghis Con next week, for students in my "Granny Square Greatness" side quest. 🤩 Geek out!
